Originally known as Armistice Day, the holiday commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany, ending World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, the day was officially renamed Veterans Day to honor all American veterans who have served in times of war or peace.
The true meaning of Veterans Day extends beyond a day off from work or a sale at the local store. It is a day to express gratitude to the brave men and women who have selflessly dedicated themselves to safeguarding the freedoms and values we hold dear.
