Voice of the Vet had the honor of meeting with and sitting down with Lt. Vincent Shank, a 102 year old World War II Veteran who was a POW for 22 months.
Vincent Shank was a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Air Corp and was a Navigator on a B-17 during WWII. On his 32nd mission, his plane was shot down and he parachuted safely, but was captured by the Nazi’s and held in a few different German Prisoner of War Camps for 22 months.
Lt. Shank’s POW Camp was freed by General George Patton and his Tank Division. At that time the camp had over 100,000 prisoners in it. Lt. Shank had the opportunity to see General Patton and be within 10 feet of him while he delivered a speech to the now freed men.
Prior to the war, Vincent Shank graduated from San Jose State. He was a trumpet player and was in a band that played at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago. After that he played in the band that played the music for the “Rat Pack” and other famous celebrities.
At 27 years old, Vincent chose to join the Army Air Corp and do his part to help the United States win the war. This is Part 1 of 2 .
