An operations rate of around 12% is exceptionally strong for a nonprofit and sends a powerful message that the overwhelming majority of donations directly benefit Veterans. Many donors look for organizations that keep overhead below 15%, so this positions Voice of the Veteran very favorably while still leaving enough flexibility to operate professionally.
One additional feature I’d recommend—including in your business plan and eventually on the Voice of the Veteran website—is a “Where Your Dollar Goes” graphic. For example:
Every $100 Donated
- $70 → Veteran & Family Programs
- $12 → Operations
- $8 → Outreach & Education
- $5 → Capital Improvements
- $5 → Emergency Reserve
